How Do Wind Turbines Generate Electricity?

The wind turbine moves when the wind blows. It takes the wind’s energy and moves around an axis. The turbine is made up of numerous blades they start at 3 to 12 blades and some even have more. The blades help catch the wind to force the turbine to move faster generating more friction. A gearbox and generator capture the friction that the turbine causes. The generator turns this into a form of current. The current needs to be inverted (converted) to the type of power that is needed. Think of the wind generator as a giant fan that captures the wind instead of produces the wind.

Some manufacturers think that three blades is enough to capture the energy while others think that the more blades, the more energy. Well let us test their theories out. It is known that the three blade is one of the best wind turbines because of the spacing and the wind the blades produce as they are being propelled. The fourth blade would not generate as much electricity as the wind is moving up and over the fourth blade making is not economical to add a fourth blade. There are newer blades that are not like the original straight out blade that seems to be working well. These newer blades are a configuration of short lines (some look like eggbeaters, smaller blades etc.) These new blades have shown that you can generate electricity effectively without the three-blade system.

We agree that the 3-blade system has been great for the wind turbine. How are we to redesign the system to get the most energy? The weight of the blade is the question. On the horizon is nanotechnology that could replace the blade with a much more rigid but lightweight blade that will out perform any blade. This blade is so lightweight that not much wind is needed to move it, which means people in states that are windless or have very little wind will be able to have wind turbines on their property to capture what wind they have and turn it into energy. The lighter blades will mean more electricity for those that want to upgrade to these types of blades. These blades are in prototype right now at Manas-Zloczower. Let us see when they come out on the market as nanotube technology.

Now let us look at the different types of generators for the wind turbines. There are many types of generators for the wind turbine. They can be grouped into three separate groups by functions.

The first group is the induction generator. This generator works on the premise that electricity is produced when their shaft is rotated faster than the motor. This creates the magnetic field. The problem with this is that gearing is needed, as the wind is not a steady stream. Extra parts mean that a simple system turns into a much more complicated system.

The second group is the permanent magnet alternators. This alternator has one set of electromagnets and one set of permanent magnets. Permanent magnets on the rotor and electromagnets on the stator. This is the best and easiest way to build a generator for the DIY type person.

The third and final group is the Brushed DC motor. This motor is the opposite of the permanent magnet motor. The greatest advantage to the brushed DC motor is that they are easy to get and relatively inexpensive. You can get them on E-bay, surplus supply stores, industrial supply stores, and they are on household things like a treadmill.

Now you know how a wind turbine generates electricity and the different components needed, are you ready to build your own and start getting off your dependence of foreign oil and pollution causing agents?

Are Wind Turbines Beneficial Or Perhaps Hazardous?

Converting wind power into electricity is normally the function of wind turbines. A normal wind turbine is a large tower that has blades attached to a rotor. When the wind blows the wind turbine the blades make the rotor rotate and the movement of the rotor makes the generator within the turbine make power. Inside the power generator are many magnets and a bunch of copper wire, which creates electricity. There’s almost nothing complicated about this sort of generator.

Naturally for the turbine to do the job there needs to be wind. Wind is more potent higher up in the sky, which is why wind turbines are very tall, at around 30 meters. This height enables the rotor to obtain more exposure to the wind and therefore create a lot more electricity. Of course it goes without saying that without sufficient wind, no power will be made. This is the reason why extensive research is conducted on areas for potential wind turbines to make sure that there’s enough wind to generate energy. One perfect location is in coastal zones because there are usually consistent wind patterns in these places. Consistent winds does not necessarily mean that they consistently blow from the same direction. To adjust to varying wind directions, the turbines are fashioned to continually face into the wind, irrespective of direction.

Enough electricity to meet the needs of an entire household may be produced from a single turbine. A battery backup that is replenished by the turbines, supplies power during times when no wind blows. While they can certainly produce a lot of electricity, they’re not cheap at all and getting back your introductory investment on one can take many years. Unlike other green energy methods, wind turbines will consistently work 24/7, providing that there is wind. Solar panels cannot function in the dark however wind turbines can. Another great thing about wind turbines is that these are generally eco-friendly as they produce absolutely no pollution. This implies that wind turbines do not contribute when it comes to the effects of global warming because there are no fuels actually burned and no emissions being introduced into the atmosphere. The energy source is likewise renewable, just like solar energy, as there is always wind blowing. Therefore there is always gonna be energy created by the turbines.

Let’s consider what some may illustrate as the cons of wind turbine generated electricity. Many individuals don’t want to be viewing a tall tower with a propeller on top outside their window. Many governments choose to put wind turbines on coastal areas and out to sea as a result of the large amounts of wind in these areas, but many people grumble saying that they blight the landscape. They are also fairly noisy due to the rotor creating sound as it moves. Wildlife fanatics complain that birds and bats are damaged by them. The reason stated for bats traveling into wind turbines is that the motion in the air disrupts their proficiency to hear and see with sonar. While these incidents are rarely documented they do occur.

Wind turbines certainly seem to be a good source of energy, but obviously there are downsides like with anything. With appropriate planning they can be particularly useful and effective.

Advanced over-speed control mechanism vs. old style furling

Problems with old style furling:

Old style furling works well in an ideal, wind tunnel test environment. Realistically, wind speed and wind direction changes frequently and mechanical furling doesn’t have instantaneous response to actual changes of wind status. Especially in bad weather conditions, small wind turbine furling components wear out quickly, therefore, increases maintenance costs and shorten wind turbine service life or causes system failure.

Most of old style furling based wind turbines have three moving parts. It is the moving parts for mechanical over-speed protection that wear out and require a lot of maintenance. Operation of furling based wind turbines would lead to mechanical abrasion, cause vibration, malfunction, and failure of the wind turbine and other devastating results in the long run.

The rule of thumb for a reliable wind turbine is that the fewer the moving parts, the more reliable the wind turbine is.

Windmax Solution:

Windmax H series adopted Innovative over-speed control so it improves the reliability by abandoning the moving parts for mechanical over-speed protection and minimizing the moving parts to only two.

Innovative over-speed control design of the Windmax H series:

Windmax H series speed limitation abandoned the traditional failure-prone mechanical furling system and solved safety and reliability problems facing most small wind turbines. Advanced speed limitation of Windmax H series is achieved through advanced electromagnetic speed limitation supplemented by aerodynamic speed limitation by blade deformation. Electromagnetic braking is used in combination with Aerodynamic braking to reduce the rotational speed of the generator.

Combination of Electromagnetic braking and aerodynamic braking maximizes energy capture by extending Windmax H series turbine’s operating speed range into higher speed winds and lower speed winds which are missed by the old style wind turbines.

1. Electromagnetic speed limitation:

Controller will monitor the wind generator rotation through the wind generator output voltage and frequency, and will timely control wind generator rotation by generating reverse reluctance torque if necessary, according to different wind conditions and battery status. Electromagnetic control features quick response, high reliability and therefore ensures the entire control system to be highly reliable.

2. Blade aerodynamic braking:

In high wind speed conditions, patented blades will generate a reverse reluctance torque, so that the blade efficiency falls and the blade rotation speed starts to decline. With the continuing reluctance torque, blade rotation speed is limited to a certain range to prevent damage to the wind turbine blades.

Higher performance at low wind speed Problem with small wind turbine system on the market today The most challenging problem facing small wind turbine systems is that power output is very low or close to nothing under low wind condition. The wind speed in most locations don’t stay at rated wind speed all the time, wind turbine actually operates at wind speed lower than rated wind speed at most of the time. In order to have good overall energy output, it is critical for small wind turbine to output as much as power at low wind speed. WindMax Solution: Strong Neodymium magnet PMA, unique winding and multi pole design reduces the start-up torque of the alternator that assures the WINDMAX-H series can generate electricity at low wind speed. WindMax system components such as wind generator and blades are designed to output more electricity at low wind speed than other small wind turbines on the market today. WindMax system’s excellent power output under low wind speed results in greater energy production yield and lowest ownership cost.
